India privacy overhaul draws mixed reactions
Our Partner, Jitendra Soni shares his views in an article titled, “India privacy overhaul draws mixed reactions” published by Global Data Review which analyses the industry response on the content of the newly published Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022.
Sharing his perspective on the initial industry reactions, Jitendra remarked that:
“The earlier versions of the bill were too complex and overly prescriptive in the process of trying to achieve too many things at once. To be fair, what India needed was a simpler, principal-based data protection regime, and not necessarily a GDPR-styled law. This is what the bill proposes to achieve and that is a step in the right direction. Of course, the devil will be in the details plugged in during the legislative process before this bill becomes a law.
The overall outlook of India’s data privacy law looks promising and apt for the current phase of digital revolution that India is undergoing. As the privacy ecosystem matures and newer technologies come into play, ropes may be further tightened.”
